Course Objectives

  • Sampling of Bituminous Materials (FM 1-T040)
  • Sampling of Hot Mix Bituminous Paving Mixtures (FM 1-T168)
  • Bulk Specific Gravity of Compacted Bituminous Mixtures (FM 1-T166)
  • Maximum Specific Gravity of Bituminous Paving Mixtures (FM 1-T209)
  • Standard Method for Preparing and Determining the Density of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Specimens by Means of the SHRP Gyratory Compactor (AASHTO TP 4-97)
  • Quantitative Determination of Asphalt Content from Asphalt Paving Mixtures by the Ignition Method (FM 5-563)
  • Mechanical Analysis of Extracted Aggregate (FM T-30)

Class Duration | Three Days, exam on third day

Exam Requirements | A multiple choice, written exam is required.  A proficiency exam is required.  The trainee will be expected to demonstrate skills in FM 1-T209, FM 1-T166, FM 5-545, AASHTO TP-4 and FM 5-563. The trainee has two chances to pass each test. Two failures in one area constitute failure of the proficiency examination.

Asphalt Plant Level 2 | To assure that personnel operating or inspecting an asphalt production operation (at a plant) are familiar with FDOT specification requirements, good materials management, and equipment operation necessary to produce a Superpave mixture which will meet the mix design criteria and mix production requirements.

Course Objectives

  • Aggregate Storage and Feeding Systems
  • Asphalt Cement Supply Systems
  • Aggregate Drying and Heating Systems
  • Exhaust Fan Systems
  • Emission Control Systems
  • Production and Drying Efficiency
  • Batch Type Facilities
  • Surge Storage Equipment
Class Duration | Three Days, exam on third day
