Performance Lab Technician

No immediate qualifications required.

The Performance Lab Technician will measure, mix, test and record data for asphalt hot mix materials. This Technician will be under the direct supervision of the Performance Lab Manager. Responsibilities include:

learning and following correct test methods
performing asphalt and aggregates tests
assist with making asphalt mixtures as prescribed by a mix design
keep accurate account of projects/data using laboratory notebook/performance lab data worksheets
provide project progress during group meetings
maintain a clean and orderly work space in the lab
material inventory
assist in material preparation for mix design and performance testing sample fabrication
other duties as assigned

The technician is responsible for updating their supervisor on the status of their progress within their assigned project.

The Performance Lab Technician must possess the following:

Knowledge and ability to perform basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, percentages and weights. Algebra is a plus.).
Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and methods.
Must be able to read and use basic measuring devices, i.e. scales, calipers.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Ability to perform strenuous work i.e., lift and move up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Good penmanship and record keeping.
Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.
A strong work ethic with highly organizational skills.
Ability to operate a personal computer and use Microsoft-related applications such as Word and Excel.
Ability to operate computer-based testing equipment.

Level 1 & Level 2 Asphalt Plant Quality Control/Quality Assurance Technician

Individuals with current Asphalt Plant Level 1 and Level 2 certifications will conduct tests on hot mix asphalt and materials to determine compliance to applicable specifications. Works in conjunction with asphalt plant personnel and government agencies. Responsibilities include:

Perform sampling testing on hot mix asphalt, aggregates, related asphalt mixtures and other materials
Accurate reporting of results to management
Investigate and troubleshoot quality control issues and resolve discrepancies between test results
Other duties as assigned

The Level 1 & Level 2 Technician must possess the following:

Knowledge of hot mix asphalt quality control data and FDOT job specifications
Experience with asphalt lab equipment
Familiarity with the paving process
Ability to work independently
Willingness to work nights and weekends when required

Level 1 & Level 2 Asphalt Paving Quality Control/Quality Assurance Technician

Individuals must have current Asphalt Paving Level 1 and Level 2 certifications. Responsible for quality control/quality assurance and reporting to and assisting the contractor during paving operations. Other responsibilities include:

Perform quality control of contractor’s operations (compliance with specifications)
Safely and efficiently collect samples for testing asphalt materials
Perform asphalt coring operations
Utilize nuclear density gauges for asphalt compaction
Perform sampling, testing and reporting according to established protocol in a timely manner
Report non-compliant test results to superintendent when applicable
Maintain daily record of test results, prepare daily reports and submit results to management
Other duties as assigned

The Level 1 & Level 2 Technicians must possess the following:

Working knowledge of FDOT job specifications
Familiarity of the paving process
Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Willingness to work nights and weekends when required

Asphalt Binder Lab Technician

The Binder Lab Technician will complete testing of asphalt binder and asphalt emulsions through AASHTO and ASTM test procedures. This technician will be under the direct supervision of the Binder Lab Manager. Responsibilities include:

learning and following correct test methods
follow direction and guidelines on research and development projects
provide project progress during group meetings
maintain a clean and orderly work space in the lab
other duties as assigned

Asphalt Mix Designer

The Asphalt Mix Designer will direct and manage all mix design creation for Asphalt Testing Solutions & Engineering (ATS). The Asphalt Mix Designer will be responsible for the creation, development, modification and review of all designs ATS is contracted to perform. The designer is responsible for staying up to date on AASHTO, ASTM and other test methods and design specifications as specified. Responsibilities include:

understanding specifications and applications for all types of asphalt designs
- Designs include Marshall, Superpave, Superpave 5, SMA, Regressed Air Voids, Porous Friction Courses, Cold In-Place Mixtures, Pavement Preservation
staying up to date on performance related testing involved in Balanced Mix Design processes and specifications
apply asphalt mixture expertise to assist in properly producing and troubleshooting mixtures during production
create a standard operating procedure for proper mixing at ATS
understand and apply the concepts of asphalt mix design as it applies to all types of mixtures; i.e. Superpave, Marshall, Stone Matrix Asphalt, Porous Friction Courses, Cold In-Place Mixtures, etc
maintain the asphalt mixing equipment
maintain detailed records for each mix design as it applies to each project and for future use
responsible for mix design data precision, accuracy and common sense
troubleshoot mixing equipment issues with the assistance of the Performance Lab Manager
troubleshoot design issues with the assistance of the Performance Lab Manager and Director of Engineering
responsible for reading, understanding and following proper test methods and laboratory standard operating procedures
ensure supplies and equipment are adequately stocked for client projects and internal research

The Asphalt Mix Designer must possess the following:

High School Diploma or GED
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Asphalt Mix Designer Certification by a recognized certifying body or certification of equivalent asphalt knowledge
Minimum of three years of mix design experience
Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record

CTQP Plant Level 1 & 2
CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer
ACI Aggregate Technician
Asphalt Institute Mix Design Technologies Certification
NCAT Advanced Mix Design Certification
NCAT SMA Mix Design and Construction
8 PDH Biannually

Asphalt Mix Design Trainee

The Asphalt Mix Design Trainee will follow the instruction of the Engineer or certified Mix Designer and learn the process of asphalt mix design. The trainee will be responsible for work assignments involving client mixtures as well as internal research. The trainee will be responsible for staying up to date on AASHTO, ASTM and other test methods as specified. Responsibilities include:

acquire the physical skills necessary to create a consistent, repeatable asphalt mixture
learn the basic fundamentals of asphalt mix design for Superpave and Marshall
maintain the asphalt mixing equipment
maintain records for each mix design
responsible for mix design data precision, accuracy and common sense
troubleshoot mixing equipment issues with the assistance of the Performance Lab Manager
Rrsponsible for reading, understanding and following proper test methods and laboratory standard operating procedures
ensure supplies and equipment are adequately stocked for client projects and internal research

The Aspahlt Mix Design Trainee must possess the following:

High School Diploma or GED
Experience in operating laboratory equipment
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Minimum Asphalt Laboratory Technician Certification by a recognized certifying body or certification of equivalent asphalt knowledge
Valid Driver’s License is required

This position requires continued training to include:

CTQP Plant Level 1 & 2 or Basic Mixture Technician Training
CTQP Asphalt Mix Designer
NCAT Asphalt Mix Design Certification
4 PDH Biannually
