Asphalt Testing Solutions & Engineering Director of Operations is Airport Asphalt Certified

In addition to the recent FAA asphalt specifications update, paving airports involve considerations different from highway or commercial paving. The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) hosts an Airfield Asphalt Certification Program at its Auburn facility throughout the year for Asphalt Lab Technicians, QC Managers and Paving Inspectors. “The Airfield Asphalt Certification Program is intended to increase the quality of construction for work performed under the United Facilities Guide Specification (UFGS) airfield asphalt specifications. The certification program will help ensure that project team members are knowledgeable in the area of airfield asphalt pavements, with respect to specification and testing requirements, acceptance and quality control, as well as inspection during construction.”

ATS Jacksonville Director of Operations Steve McReynolds completed the program in March and is now certified in Airfield Asphalt Pavement QC Manager and Airfield Asphalt Paving Inspector. The Airfield Asphalt Pavement QC Manager Certification allows Steve to oversee all asphalt quality control responsibilities including asphalt testing and inspection, review asphalt pavement transmittals prior to submitting them to the Government, make mix design adjustments and manager all other quality-related activities on an airfield asphalt paving project.

In order for personnel to inspect airfield asphalt pavement projects, they must have an Airfield Asphalt Paving Inspector Certification. Steve’s responsibilities include identifying any potential pavement issues during construction and ensuring the asphalt quality control staff appropriately addresses these issues. He must be available on the project during all airfield paving operations by the paving contractor and asphalt testing team.

NCAT’s website allows visitors to search for certified individuals. Just as it is important to hire an accredited asphalt lab for your service needs, it’s important for asphalt contractors to hire an airfield asphalt certified asphalt technician, QC Manager or Paving Inspector for airport projects.
