Investing in the Next Generation - ATS Summer Internship Program Another Success!

At ATS, we believe the future of our industry starts with investing in the next generation. This summer, we had the opportunity to welcome three high school interns who spent their summer learning firsthand what it takes to build and maintain quality infrastructure.

Reed and Phoenix participated in an 11-week rotation through our Performance Lab,Quality Control Lab, and QC Roadway teams. Throughout the program, they gained hands-on experience preparing and testing asphalt materials, sampling and evaluating production, and observing quality control efforts in the field. From batching aggregates and compacting specimens to reviewing test results and visiting active paving projects, they experienced the many roles that contribute to producing safe, high-quality roads. The program concluded with time spent in the area that interested them most, allowing them to explore potential career paths while building confidence and practical skills.

Reed chose to perfect his skills in the QC lab. Phoenix chose the same and also focused on learning more in Asphalt Mix Design.

“This is my third year in the ATS internship program,” said Reed. “I worked at the asphalt plant for two years before joining the QC team this year. I really enjoyed working in the lab and learning about the different tests used to make sure the asphalt is safe and durable. It’s amazing how much of an impact a small test in the lab can have on the quality and performance of an entire roadway.”

Kaeda worked in an administrative role, where she supported a variety of business operations, assisted with data entry and analysis, and learned about the procedures that drive our Quality Assurance Program. This experience provided valuable insight into the collaboration required behind the scenes to keep projects moving efficiently while strengthening her organizational, analytical ,and problem-solving skills.

While technical knowledge is an important part of any internship, our goal extends far beyond teaching laboratory procedures or administrative tasks. We strive to instill the values that create successful professionals: accountability, responsibility, communication, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. These are skills that will benefit our interns no matter where their careers take them.

The asphalt industry offers rewarding opportunities in science, engineering, construction, quality assurance, administration, and countless other disciplines. By introducing students to these careers early, we hope to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and demonstrate that there are exciting and meaningful futures within our industry.
