ATS Supports Worksforce Growth Through FDOT Mobile Training Program

Florida’s Transportation Academy’s Mobile Training Program has been traveling across the state, and most recently it made a stop in Jacksonville! This paid, four-week program is designed to grow Florida’s pool of skilled laborers and support the delivery of upcoming infrastructure projects.

ATS' Director of Operations, Steve McReynolds, and Duval Asphalt Production Manager, TJ Young, led the asphalt portion of the curriculum, covering production, paving, and quality control.

Students participated in presentations from McReynolds and Young, engaging with asphalt samples and cores to better understand key principles. Afterward, the class explored paving equipment firsthand to gain a clearer view of how the paving process works in the field.

“This training program is more than a workshop; it’s an investment in people,” said McReynolds. “When we help prospective hires understand the craft behind building Florida’s roads, we’re supporting contractors, strengthening FDOT partnerships, and improving the quality of the roads our communities depend on every day.”

The following day, Duval Asphalt’s Director of Recruitment & Workforce Development, Sam Cuartas, met with attendees interested in pursuing a career in the asphalt industry.

In addition to asphalt, the four-week program includes hands-on training in:

  • Construction Math
  • Plans Reading
  • Safety / OSHA (10-Hour) / Trench Safety
  • Survey / Soft Skills
  • Intermediate MOT
  • Materials Testing
  • Earthwork (Embankment, Subgrade, Base)
  • Drainage & Utilities / Trench Safety
  • Environmental Protection / Permitting
  • Concrete Plants & Paving

Whether you’re new to construction or exploring a career change, this program provides the tools and training needed to jumpstart a successful path in the construction field.
