Asphalt Testing Solutions & Engineering’s (ATS) labs are located near St. Augustine, Florida, home to the Fountain of Youth. The is fitting because the team at ATS has been working with iEmulsions Corporation and Collaborative Aggregates, LLC, testing products to help pavements revitalize and delay their aging!
The patented process relies on a two-step application. Collaborative Aggregate’s Delta S-HR rejuvenator is applied to the asphalt surface, then is immediately followed by a polymer emulsion. The rejuvenator will take the appropriate time to absorb into the asphalt surface and rejuvenate the aged asphalt as the emulsion serves as a protective layer to the rejuvenator as well as maintains the roadway’s surface friction. A majority of the polymer will eventually wear off and expose the properly rejuvenated surface with the benefit of added polymer in the void spaces of the surface. This unique process introduces an innovative and budget-friendly way to extend the life of asphalt pavements.
Laboratory and field testing with ATS determined the drop in viscosity, ensuring the rejuvenator was absorbing into the pavement, and the dry times affected by different polymer dilution rates, ensuring the pavement can be open to traffic in a reasonable amount of time following the application.
While ATS was testing the viscosity and dry time, the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) was testing the system for friction using the Dynamic Friction Test (DFT).
